On Friday 3rd September at 10am the Red Ensign flag will be raised by the Deputy Mayor - Cllr Tina Reavey to mark Merchant Navy Day. Everyone is welcome to join her by the War Memorial.
3rd September 1939 marks the first major British maritime casualty, the merchant vessel SS Athenia, torpedoed just a few hours after hostilities were declared, with the loss of 128 passengers and crew.
Although many hundreds of merchant ships and thousands of seafarers would meet the same fate in the years to come, 3rd September is now enshrined as 'Merchant Navy Day' to honour the brave men and women who kept our island nation afloat during both World Wars, and even during peacetime faced – and continue to face – the more routine perils of violent storms and mountainous seas. Nene Valley Festival returns this September
People from across the district, and further afield, are invited to celebrate the rich heritage, wildlife and culture of the Nene Valley as the annual Nene Valley Festival returns this September.
The festival will take place from Saturday 11 September - Sunday 19 September. As with previous years, the festival will offer a variety of activities for the whole family. More »
Featuring more than events at key locations across the Nene Valley from Northampton to Peterborough, the festival will include a wide range of activities for all ages. As part of the festival Higham Ferrers Town Council jointly with Rushden Town Council are holding a Heritage Day at Rushden Lakes on 19th September between 10am and 4pm.
The festival is being organised through the Destination Nene Valley project, which works with local tourism partners, and the Nenescape Landscape partnership, to promote the Nene Valley as a competitive, sustainable destination offering wildlife and heritage to local, national and international audiences.
