Victorian Extravaganza Report

The day of the return of the Victorian Extravaganza was approached with some trepidation as the weather forecasts in the run up were uniformly awful with high winds and torrential rain being forecast.

The day of the event began with soaking wet streets from overnight rain but remained fine as the opening ceremony approached at 12 noon. The opening blessing and ceremony was carried out by Father Grant Brockhouse and the Mayor of Higham Ferrers Councillor Mrs. Anna Sauntson, who then took the first ride on the carousel.

We were joined at the event by Rob Bailey of Rushden together with his half size replica McLaren Traction Engine and trailer who gave children rides down College Street in exchange for a small donation which raised £95.20 for Macmillan Cancer Charity.

We were joined for the event by the Moulton Morris Men who performed two sets of dances for us and this was fully appreciated by the fairgoers.

The fair was a great success despite the adverse weather and received very many complimentary comments from the public.

As can be seen by the pictures a good time was had by all and the afternoon was further enhanced by the Town Christmas Lights being switched on by the Mayor at 5.00p.m. with the usual preamble of the countdown from 10 following which the Market Square and Town Hall became a mass of twinkling white lights. The only down side on the day was the heavy rain which arrived at 6.15p.m. which meant that the fair had to close early but we look forward to an even bigger, improved event next year.
